Origin and history
The castle of Chalaines, located in the commune of the same name, was built in 1784, as attests the date engraved on the agrafe under the cornice of the entrance door. Commanded by Jean-Baptiste Pernot, king's adviser and prosecutor to the jurisdiction of the treaties of Vaucouleurs, it reflects the civil architecture of the late eighteenth century. Its vaulted basement and outbuildings, including a dovecote, date from the same period.
The estate remained in the Pernot family until 1844, before changing hands several times. Around 1914, it was bought by the ancestors of the present owners. The interior was renovated during the 19th century, adapting the building to the tastes and needs of its successive occupants. The castle and its estate (cadastre AB 207 to 210) were listed in the Historical Monuments by order of 1 June 1992, recognizing their heritage value.
Today, Chalaines Castle retains original architectural elements, such as the courtyard façade and its dated decorations. Although the information on its access (visits, rental, accommodation) is not specified in the sources, its registration as Historical Monuments makes it a notable testimony of the Lorraine heritage of the end of the Ancien Régime.
