Origin and history
The castle of Citou, mentioned in 1183 and 1189 under the term castrum, was originally a dependency of the Abbey of Caunes. Although its present appearance dates from the 16th century, its implantation on a rocky piton reveals an ancient defensive vocation. The site operates a vertical cliff to the northwest, while the entrance, raised and protected by a steeple, bears witness to medieval military adaptations. A scald and a round turret in corbellation reinforce its irregular quadrilateral structure, combining local schist and fortification techniques.
The castle has been listed as a historic monument since 1948, recognizing its heritage value, while its surroundings have been protected as a natural site since 1942. The Merimée base classifies it as a communal property, stressing its local anchor. Nearby, a silo dug into the rock suggests an agricultural or seigneurial occupation linked to the castle. Its architecture, halfway between strong house and fortress, illustrates the tensions between noble habitat and defensive necessity in the Renaissance Languedoc.
The location of Citou, in the present department of Aude (Occitanian region), places the castle in a territory marked by the heritage of medieval abbeys and feudal conflicts. The initial castrum, then the fortified house of the sixteenth century, reflects the evolution of local authorities, between ecclesiastical influence (Caunes Abbey) and seigneurial affirmation. The lack of mention of specific owners in the sources limits the knowledge of its social history, but its inscription among the historical monuments of Aude makes it a major architectural witness.
