Origin and history

The castle of Craincourt, located in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region, has its origins at the end of the 15th century in the form of a strong house built by the family of Craincourt. This rectangular building, covered with a two-sided roof, was initially flanked by towers and a dovecote, reflecting a defensive architecture typical of the medieval era. The seigneury of Craincourt, dependent on the Marquisate of Nomeny, was successively owned by influential Lorrain families, including the Haraucourt, the Einville and the Greische, the latter having probably added the Renaissance elements in the 4th quarter of the 16th century.

At the beginning of the 18th century, the castle underwent major interior changes, as evidenced by the dates engraved on the chimneys, as well as the construction of a new gate in 1728. Together, including the main house, outbuildings, the fence wall and its gate, illustrates an architectural transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The exteriors, marked by Renaissance influences, contrast with the dependencies modified in the 19th century. Ranked a historic monument in 1991, the castle of Craincourt today embodies a preserved Lorrain heritage, mixing seigneurial history and stylistic evolutions.

The seigneury of Craincourt, originally a vousary of Senones Abbey, was given to the devout of Delme before passing into the hands of the Dukes of Lorrain. The Greisches, lords of Jallaucourt, contributed in particular to its embellishment by adding square towers and a dovecote, giving it its present appearance as a castle. This monument, inscribed with its outbuildings and its enclosure, offers a representative example of the adaptation of medieval fortresses to the aesthetic canons of the Renaissance in Lorraine.
