Origin and history

Crocq Castle, built in stone in 1190 by Robert, Count of Clermont and Dolphin of Auvergne, marked the western border of the Dauphiné d'Auvergne. This territory, distinct from the county of Auvergne controlled by his uncle Guillaume VIII, included Crocq as a strategic stronghold. Located on an ancient road linking Clermont to Limoges via Felletin, the castle played a key role in the exchange and defence of the region.

In 1196 King Philippe Auguste confiscated Crocq and La Combraille after Robert and his cousin Guy II, Count of Auvergne, had joined Richard Cœur de Lion. This land was returned in 1199, before being seized again in 1203. The castle remained a political issue until its destruction in 1632, ordered by Richelieu. Its ruins, classified as historical monuments in 1926, still bear witness to its past importance.

Today, the remains of Crocq Castle, partially restored by a local association, house exhibitions in the left tower and a panorama accessible from the right tower. Although little remains, the site retains a heritage and tourist value, offering stunning views of the surrounding area. The structure, once a symbol of power, now illustrates the medieval history and feudal conflicts of the region.
