Origin and history

The castle of Einartzhausen, built around 1560 in Phalsburg, owes its name to its proximity to a village linked to the dowry of Anna Maria of Sweden, wife of the palatin Count Georges-Jean of Palatinate-Veldenz, founder of the city. The latter, a Protestant, made it his resort residence and planned to add a temple bound by a private corridor, as well as farmhouses and a garden, although their realization is not attested. The building, originally composed of two floors with a vaulted room and a large audience room, was modified in the 17th century to integrate with the fortifications of Vauban, losing its ground floor under the embankments.

In the 17th century, under the authority of the King of France, the castle was integrated into a bastion to protect itself from the Dukes of Lorraine, rivals. Vauban made it a place of military storage, accessible only from the first floor after emplacement. The following centuries saw the building deteriorate and then be restored at the end of the 19th century. In the 20th century, it served as a youth hostel before hosting cultural events, such as the local festival. Today, it stands near the German gate, adjacent to municipal rural houses.

Although the original spiral staircase was not restored, several rooms were reconstructed. A relief at the arms of the Count Palatine and his wife, formerly located above a fireplace, remains visible on a facade. The castle, inscribed in historical monuments since March 1937, bears witness to the Protestant history of the region and its military role under the Old Regime.

Future

The castle still serves as a framework for cultural events, especially during the festival.
