Origin and history

The Château du Fôt is a medieval castle located in the commune of Saint-Amand, in Creuse (Nouvelle-Aquitaine). Although its foundations date back to the Middle Ages, the current structure is mainly the result of a reconstruction carried out between 1900 and 1921 by Antoine Jorrand, an industrialist linked to the tapestries of Aubusson. The castle is three kilometres northeast of this city, on a historic axis linking the south of Creuse to Guéret and La Souterraine.

The restoration project was inspired by the architectural principles of Viollet-le-Duc, a choice reflecting the trends of the time for the reinterpretation of medieval styles. A second campaign began in the 2000s to preserve the building. The castle was also immortalized in 1935 by a gouache of Maurice Utrillo, highlighting its artistic and heritage interest.

Visible from the departmental road 990 around Aubusson, the Château du Fôt illustrates the link between industrial and architectural heritage in this region marked by the history of tapestries. Its strategic location and successive transformations bear witness to the local evolutions, between medieval heritage and modernity of the early twentieth century.
