Origin and history
The Château de Franc-Séjour is a strong house built at the end of the 15th century. This type of construction, typical of the late medieval period, served both as a seigneurial residence and as a place of protection for local inhabitants. Located in Thiers, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, it illustrates the defensive and residential architecture of the period, marked by towers and walls of enclosure.
The estate includes a castle organized around an inner courtyard, surrounded by four building bodies and flanked by two towers. It also extends over a park with gardens, vegetable garden, ponds, fountain and fence walls, as well as commons arranged around a second courtyard. These elements reflect a spatial organization designed to combine utility, defense and approval, characteristic of the strong houses of this period.
Although the sources do not specify the owners or the specific historical events related to this castle, its architecture and layout suggest a function both residential and symbolic. Fortified houses like Franc-Séjour often played a central role in the social and economic organization of rural territories, serving as a gathering and management point for local lords.
