Origin and history
The Château de Labeaume stands on the town of Labeaume, in Ardèche, a rural area of the southern part of the department marked by limestone cliffs and agricultural terraces called faizes. The village, clinging to steep slopes above the Baume River, retains traces of troglodyte habitats dug in the numerous natural cavities (balms). These geological and architectural peculiarities reflect an old adaptation of local populations to a difficult terrain, where terrace farming and the exploitation of caves have played a central role in everyday life.
The municipality of Labeaume, attached to the Gorges de l'Ardèche community, is crossed by the departmental roads RD 345 and RD 4. Its territory, mostly covered by forests and semi-natural habitats (92.6% in 2018), has seen a slight reduction in these areas in favour of heterogeneous agricultural areas. In 1800, the neighbouring commune of Auriolles detached from it, before being attached to Saint-Alban-Auriolles in 1972. These territorial developments illustrate the administrative and demographic recompositions of the region, in a rural context where natural resources and streams (Ardèche, Beaume, Ligne) have long structured communal boundaries and economic activities.
The Labeaume climate, classified as a Mediterranean with mountain influences, is characterized by warm and dry summers and moderate precipitation (about 1,000 mm/year). This climate, combined with the steep topography, has favoured adapted lifestyles, such as livestock farming and subsistence farming on terraces. Seismic risks, although low (zone 2), recall the vulnerability of the territory, located near the more exposed Rhône valley. These natural elements have undoubtedly influenced the establishment and function of the castle, although its specific history and possible defensive or seigneurial roles are not documented in the available sources.
There is no specific information to date the construction of the Château de Labeaume or to identify its owners or historical functions. The archives mention only its existence as a local monument, without details of its architecture or evolution. Available studies focus more on the village and its environment (troglodyte habitats, terraces, climate) than on the castle itself, leaving its past largely unknown. Old maps, such as Cassini's (18th century), could offer clues, but their analysis goes beyond the current data.
