Origin and history

The Château de Lavaud is an emblematic monument of the commune of Montbron, in the Charente department, in New Aquitaine. It is distinguished by its characteristic architecture, including its two large pepper towers, which make it a notable example of the local heritage. Located on the edge of the Tardoire, this castle illustrates the architectural and family history of the region.

In the 19th century, the castle belonged to the oldest branch of the family Le Francois des Courtis (of the Groye). This link with a local noble family demonstrates its historical and social importance. Today, the castle has been converted into guest rooms, offering a new life to this heritage while allowing visitors to discover its charm and history.

Castles such as Lavaud often played a central role in the social and economic organisation of rural areas. In Charente, these buildings were symbols of power and prestige for the families who owned them. Their presence also reflected local agricultural and artisanal activities, while serving as places of residence or management of surrounding lands.
