Origin and history

Château des Mauberets is a building located in the municipality of La Sauzière-Saint-Jean, in the department of Tarn, in the Occitanie region. Although its exact date of construction is not attested precisely, the sources agree to place it between the end of the seventeenth century and the beginning of the eighteenth century. This castle illustrates the civil architecture of this period, marked by a transition between the classical and baroque regional styles.

The history of the castle remains partially documented, but architectural traces indicate later changes, especially in the 19th and 20th centuries. Notable modifications include a new roof, as well as aesthetic or structural adjustments not detailed in the available sources. These transformations reflect the adaptation of the building to the needs and tastes of successive periods, without fundamentally altering its original appearance.

On the architectural level, the Château des Mauberets is distinguished by its body of brick square houses, raised on three levels, including a floor under attic. Its four corners are punctuated with towers of various shapes and heights: three are square, while the one on the northwest corner is round. The southwest tower, square, dominates the whole of an additional floor. The facades, soberly decorated with chains, bandages and mouldings, give the castle a discreet elegance. The windows of the towers, rectangular, contrast with the rounded openings of the house, adding to its distinctive character.

The available sources do not mention the original owners or architects who worked on its construction or transformation. Similarly, the precise uses of the castle over the centuries — seigneurial residence, agricultural or other — are not explicitly documented. Its inclusion in the list of castles of the Tarn suggests a local heritage recognition, although its detailed history remains to be explored.

The historical regional context places this castle in a pivotal period for Occitanie. At the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, the region, then integrated into the Kingdom of France, experienced political stabilization after the religious unrest of the Wars of Religion. The castles of that time, often rebuilt or modernized, reflect both a desire for social affirmation of their owners and an adaptation to new architectural norms, mixing local tradition and national influences.
