Origin and history
The Château des Montels is an emblematic building of Giroussens, in the department of Tarn (Occitan region). Built in the second half of the 19th century, it is part of the series of chestnut constructions that marked this period in France, reflecting the economic and social development of the local bourgeoisie. Its architecture, both sober and elegant, illustrates the aesthetic cannons of the time, mixing tradition and modernity.
Located between the Pastel motorway and the banks of the Agout, the castle is distinguished by its body of brick square houses, topped by roofs in slate pavilions. Its northern façade, adorned with two round scallops and a stone perron, bears witness to a search for balance between functionality and decoration. The interior, spread over two floors plus attices, is rhythmized by five spans, including the central, enhanced by stone bands and a balcony, highlights the prestigious character of the house.
The roof, punctuated with three skylights (two round and a triangular pediment) adds a touch of refinement to the whole. This castle, although less known than other Tarn monuments, embodies the 19th century architectural heritage in Occitanie. It is now one of the castles listed in the department, contributing to the local heritage wealth.
