Origin and history
The Château des Ostieux is a mansion built at the end of the 15th century, originally composed of a rectangular house on cellars, stables, a farmhouse, barns and a garden with pond, as evidenced by an admission of 1689. Access was via a porch, and the interior included a room, a kitchen on the ground floor, and rooms served by a staircase in a hexagonal tower. A corner scald was later added, changing its original appearance.
At the end of the 19th century, the architect Henri Chaîne oversees a complete repair of the facades and the construction of a new house in the south. The interiors are redecorated in an eclectic style, while the estate enriches with a landscaped park. The buildings surrounding the courtyard date in part from the 15th century, but additions from the 17th and 18th centuries complete the whole. The facades, roofs, vegetable garden and fence walls have been protected since 2005.
The castle illustrates the architectural evolution from a medieval mansion to an eclectic 19th century residence, mixing historical heritage and modern transformations. Its park and outbuildings reflect the agricultural and residential uses of the time, typical of Norman estates. The inscription in the Historical Monuments highlights its heritage value, both for its building and for its landscape environment.
