Origin and history

Peixotto Castle is an 18th-century building located in Talence, Gironde. Built around 1760 by architect François Lhote for banker Samuel Peixotto, it illustrates the residential architecture of the period, blending elegance and functionality for an easy family.

In 1810, the castle changed hands and was sold to the Rodrigues-Henriques family, marking the beginning of a series of transmissions between influential owners. It was then acquired in 1852 by Baron François Xavier de Espeleta, reflecting the social and economic changes of the region in the 19th century.

Part of the grounds of the castle was transformed in 1884 into a botanical garden by the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Bordeaux. This scientific and educational project strengthens the link between the monument and the local university community. Since 1935, the castle has been protected as historical monuments.

Today, Peixotto Castle is undergoing an ambitious renovation launched by the City of Talence. This project, which also includes the nearby Margaut Castle, aims to bring together their respective parks and restore these heritage spaces. The work is expected to be completed in the winter of 2026, giving new life to this historic site.
