Origin and history
The Château de Pépinville, first mentioned in 1356, has had a turbulent history, marked by successive destructions and reconstructions. In the 16th century, it was acquired by a Luxembourg family, then restored in the 18th century, as evidenced by a photograph of 1776. A round tower was replaced by a chapel in 1938, adding a religious dimension to the estate.
The castle also had a social and educational vocation. At the end of the 19th century, nuns set up an orphanage there. In 1951, a medico-psychopedagogical institute established itself, followed by the socio-educational centre in Guénange. The estate, owned by the municipality of Richemont, was transferred in November 2023 to Crédit Mutuel Développement Foncier.
On 29 July 2024, a fire ravaged the structure of the castle, but the chapel was preserved by firefighters. This monument is also known as the birthplace, in 1855, of the historian and academician Louis Léon Théodore Gosselin, better known as G. Lenotre.
