Origin and history
Château du Rozay is a 15th-century mansion located in the commune of Condrieu, in the Rhône department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built on a plateau at the edge of the river, it dominates the ravine of the Arbuel and is set in a landscape marked by steep reliefs. Its architecture, consisting of heterogeneous buildings surrounding a rectangular courtyard, reflects successive additions, with square pavilions and round towers of various sizes. The roofs, partially covered with tiles, and the adjacent chapel testify to its evolution over the centuries.
Acquired by the Multier family - Brac de La Perrière in 1898, the castle remains a private property without public access. In the 20th century, Paul Multier (1919-1984), a winemaker, created in 1978 the appellation Château du Rozay for the wine of Condrieu (AOC), thus linking the monument to the local wine history. The high tower, formerly compared to a minaret by Baron Raverat, lost its visual preeminence after architectural changes. Historical sources, such as the writings of A. Raverat (1889) or Théodore Ogier (1856), highlight his role in the Rhodanian heritage.
The site, organised around a court of honor and commons, combines defensive and residential elements. Although not open to the visit, it embodies the heritage of the Rhonalpine manors, between agricultural function (vine) and seigneurial prestige. Its strategic location, between town and river, makes it a witness to the territorial dynamics of the region, from the late Middle Ages to the modern era.
