Origin and history
The castle of Saint-Aignan stands on the commune of Saint-Aignan, in the department of Sarthe. The present building, built from the seventeenth century, replaces a medieval fortress that was burned in 1589 during the Wars of Religion. This site illustrates the transition from medieval defensive architecture to a modern aristocratic residence.
The park and the annexes to the castle were listed as historical monuments by order of 12 September 1988. Four years later, on 7 February 1994, the castle itself and the lands delimited by the moat were classified, recognizing their exceptional heritage value. These successive protections underline the historical and architectural importance of the estate.
Although the sources do not specify the sponsors or architects of reconstruction in the 17th century, the castle bears witness to the political and religious upheavals of the late 16th century. Its history also reflects the evolution of the nobility's lifestyles, from fortresses to recreational residences, in a regional context marked by conflicts between Catholics and Protestants.
