Château de Varepe, in the hamlet of Varepe (cad. A 486) : inscription by decree of 14 September 1985
Origin and history
The castle of Varepe is an ancient fortified house built between the 15th and 16th centuries. It is located in the commune of Groslée-Saint-Benoît, in the department of Ain, in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. This monument is located in the hamlet of Varepe, about 900 meters northeast of the village, at the foot of the mountain of Tantanet. Its architecture reflects the characteristics of medieval strong houses, designed to provide both a defensive and residential function.
Varepe Castle was listed as a historical monument by order of 14 September 1985. This protection concerns the entire building, located at the Varepe site, as evidenced by the Merimée base. Although the available sources do not specify its detailed history or its potential owners, its inscription underlines its heritage importance in the department of Ain.
At the time of its construction, between the 15th and 16th centuries, the Bugey region, where Groslée-Saint-Benoît is located, was marked by feudal organization and tensions related to local conflicts. Strong houses, such as the one in Varepe, played a key role in protecting land and people, while serving as a residence for lords or wealthy families. Their presence illustrates the adaptation of military architecture to the security and comfort needs of the time.
