Origin and history

The Château de Verderonne, located in the Oise region of Hauts-de-France, finds its origins in the 13th century with the construction of a castle of which two round towers remain. The seigneury, established in 1240 by Simon de Villers-Saint-Paul, passed into the hands of several noble families, including the Gesvres and the Laubespines. In 1725, the Marquis Étienne-Louis de Beaucourt completed the construction of a new castle, which was modified by the Counts of Andlau in the 18th century.

The estate, marked by successive transformations, became a strategic place during the two world wars: it served as a field hospital in 1914-1918 and was occupied by the German army in 1939-1945. Acquired in 1884 by banker M. Baudrier, the castle was left abandoned before being recently restored. Its architecture, typical of the 19th century, includes a Mansart roof, a double revolution porch and wings in return for square.

The park, built in an English garden, is home to remarkable heritage features such as a 19th-century Dutch greenhouse, an octagonal dovecote, a theatre with its machinery, and a water system powered by Rhony Creek, which was born in the park. Several buildings, including the former stables and a cooler, have been protected as historical monuments since 1984 and 2008. Today, the castle is transformed into a hotel site for seminars and receptions.

The location of the estate, 50 km north of Paris, near the Sacy-le-Grand marshes (classified Natura 2000), makes it a place at once isolated and connected to the historical axes of the region. The successive protections (classifications and inscriptions) underline its heritage importance, covering both facades and richly decorated interiors, such as the library or living rooms on the ground floor.

The history of the castle reflects the political and social upheavals of France, from the Fronde to world conflicts. Its architectural evolution, from medieval foundations to 19th century additions, illustrates the tastes and needs of local elites throughout the centuries. Recent restorations are intended to preserve this multisacular testimony, while adapting to contemporary uses.

The estate extends on Verderonne and partly on Rosoy, with a historic entrance from Place des Tilleuls. Its relative isolation, reinforced by a winding aisle and an island on the pond, makes it a mysterious place, where mix nature and built heritage. The remains of the commons, such as the pediluvius for horses or washing it, recall its agricultural and seigneurial past.
