Origin and history

Villaines Castle, located in Louplande in the Sarthe department, has its origins in the seventeenth century, although it was built on the ruins of a 12th century fortress. This site, marked by a long history, was first a medieval stronghold before becoming a seigneurial residence. The land of Villaines changed hands in 1776, from the family of Gaignon to the marquis of Aux, who gave him his name temporarily. At the end of the 19th century, the castle regained its original designation, "Villaines".

During the First World War, the area served as a training centre for American military chaplains, illustrating its strategic role. During World War II, he was occupied by German troops in 1940, adding a tragic dimension to his history. In addition, Honoré de Balzac mentions this castle in Madame Firmiani, associated with the forced sale of a property by the "Black Band", a 19th century speculator group.

The Château de Villaines is also distinguished by its architecture and heritage protections. Its facades, roofs, wrought iron staircase, moat and leak have been listed as historical monuments since 1984. The park, classified since 1967 for its 15.2 hectares, and the gardens, labeled "Remarkable Garden", underline the landscape value of the site. These elements are a major testimony of the Sarthian heritage, combining history, architecture and nature.
