Origin and history

Beaurepaire Castle, located in Oise, is one of the oldest in the vicinity of the Halatte forest. Its origins date back to the 13th century, although only a cellar and a spiral staircase remain from this period. The south wing, visible from the access road, includes a kitchen dated 1425, built under Mauroy de Saint-Ligier, while most of the current buildings (1577–1614) is the work of Pierre de Lameth and his wife Catherine du Plessis. These transformations partially masked the initial defensive structures, such as the 13th century poterne.

North wing, main house body, combines two buildings: the one, older (early 16th century), attributed to Adrien de Henencourt, preserves original sill windows. The other, redesigned in the 16th-17th centuries, ends with a picturesque ensemble including a staircase turret and two square pavilions. A third wing, demolished in 1809, was once complete. The octagonal tower of 1577, originally isolated, was connected to the castle in 1901, and its current dome dates from 1871–84. The site, lined with moat and walls, was designed for defence, reflecting the border tensions between Île-de-France and Picardie.

Ranked a Historic Monument in 1978 for its facades, roofs and interior elements (like the kitchen fireplaces), the castle saw its park and outbuildings (commons, moats, drawbridges, faisanderie) protected in 2024. The remains of the thirteenth century, such as the vaulted cellar and the brick staircase, testify to its evolution from a medieval castle to a seigneurial residence. Local materials, such as the stone of Verneuil, and late additions (dôme, building of 1901) illustrate the successive adaptations of the monument.

The castle of Beaurepaire thus embodies almost eight centuries of history, mixing military functions (reparts, moats), residential (house bodies, chapel transformed into parish church) and agricultural (farm, vegetable garden). Its "harmonically complex" architecture, described as picturesque, makes it a remarkable example of the castles of the region, marked by the conflicts and reconstructions of the 15th-17th centuries.
