Origin and history
The Château de Baron-sur-Odon is an emblematic residence located in the commune of the same name, in the department of Calvados, Normandy. Its history dates back to at least the 16th century, when it was built in the French Renaissance style. This first castle had a tower, still visible today, dating from the late 14th or early 15th century. The site thus preserves medieval architectural traces despite its subsequent transformations.
In 1690, the castle was rebuilt by a bourgeois native of Caen, marking an evolution towards a more classical style. Two wings, now missing, completed the building. The medieval tower, the only vestige of the primitive castle, was preserved during these works. This mix of styles, combining Renaissance and classicism, reflects the different phases of construction and successive architectural influences.
The castle has been partially protected since 13 February 1975, when its facades and roofs, as well as those of the old tower, were listed as historical monuments. This official recognition underscores its heritage importance in the Norman architectural landscape. The site, located to the north of the village, at the place called Chemin du Ponchet, remains a testimony of the social and architectural evolutions of the region, from medieval times to modern times.
