Origin and history

The castle of Blauzac, located in the village of the same name in Occitanie, is an emblematic monument whose construction dates back mainly to the mid-14th century, with additions to the 15th century. Its medieval civil architecture is distinguished by a quadrilateral containing towers, d'angle chains, and masonry covers bearing witness to successive construction stages. The east wing, dating from the 14th century, illustrates this period in particular, with characteristic structural elements such as cradle vaults and dogive crosses.

The structure consists of two bodies of houses in the shape of square towers, connected by a vaulted lower room serving as terrace on the upper floor. The tower rooms, vaulted on a dogive cross, have keys and caps carved with foliage and characters, while the south tower houses a monumental protruding chimney, with circular stump. The courtyard, modified in 1773 by the addition of a masonry gallery and a new staircase, nevertheless retains most of its original layout. This little remodeled castle thus offers a valuable testimony of the seigneurial habitat of the late Middle Ages.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of 10 February 2006, the castle includes in its protection the facades, roofs, the floor of the courtyard and the garden. Its state of conservation and its architectural characteristics make it a remarkable example of the evolution of aristocratic residences between the 14th and 18th centuries. The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory a priori, with an address confirmed in place of the Church and the rue du Château in Blauzac (Gard).
