Origin and history

Ablon Castle, located on the town of Ablon in Calvados, has its origins in the 13th century, when the local lords built a first fortress. Destroyed during the Hundred Years' War, it was rebuilt in the 15th century as a castle dominating the mouth of the Seine. Today, only a tower of this time remains, witness to its defensive past.

In 1767, Jean-Baptiste de Brevend undertook a radical transformation of the castle: three towers, the drawbridge and the moats were abolished, replaced by a logis in Louis XVI style pink bricks. The initial project, with two additional wings, remains unfinished. The estate was enriched by a 10-hectare English park, with a three-hundred-year-old cedar, a Chinese pavilion (19th century), and rare terraced gardens.

The castle remained in the descendants of the lords of Ablon until the 19th century, as attested Arcisse de Caumont in 1862. Partially classified as historical monuments (façades, tower, dovecote in 1990; gazebo in 1994), the site, closed to the public, also preserves medieval outbuildings ( stables, dovecote of the 15th century) and an alley of lime trees leading to the perron.

Architecturally, the castle illustrates the evolution of construction modes in the countries of Auge, mixing medieval heritage (round of the 15th century, dovecote of the 16th) and classical influences (logis of 1767). Its park, with its picturesque elements (Chinese papillon, orchard, forest), reflects the landscape tastes of the 18th and 19th centuries, while the presence of "top and bottom" gardens highlights a rare spatial organization.

The protections under the title of historical monuments specifically concern the facades, the southeast tower, the dovecote and the belvedere (called the "Pagoda"). These rankings highlight the heritage value of a defensive, residential and landscaped ensemble, marked by seven centuries of Norman history.
