Origin and history

Castelnau-Montratier Castle is a medieval building located in Gambetta Square, in the commune of Castelnau Montratier-Sainte Alauzie, in the Lot department. Built in the 13th century, it has a typical stone façade of this period, marked by three windows with arches in third-point resting on carved capitals. These architectural elements illustrate the influence of early Gothic art in the region.

The monument was listed in the Historical Monuments Inventory on December 20, 1924, recognizing its heritage value. This protection specifically concerns the facade, emphasizing its historical and artistic importance. The castle is part of the architectural landscape of Quercy, an area rich in medieval castles and buildings.

Although the sources mention its existence as early as the 13th century, little detailed information is available on its exact origins or its first occupants. Its central location on a public square suggests a defensive and symbolic role in the urban organization of Castelnau Montratier-Sainte Alauzie. Today, the castle remains a testimony of local medieval history, integrated with the Lot heritage.
