Origin and history
The Château d'Escorolles, located in the commune of Cheylade in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, has its origins in the 13th century. Reconstructed around 1424 after its destruction by the English, it preserves a 15th century tower, witness to its medieval past. This first defensive building reflects the tensions of the time between French and English kingdoms, in an area marked by border conflicts and military raids.
In the 18th century, the castle was profoundly redesigned with the addition of a house, modernizing its appearance while preserving its ancient structure. In the 19th and 20th centuries, additional changes were made, including drainage improvements, illustrating continuous adaptation to residential and agricultural needs. Left behind for more than twenty years, the property was acquired in 2015 by Vincent Callies, who undertook a complete restoration to restore the monument to its brilliance.
In terms of heritage, the facades and roofs of the castle have been protected by an inscription in the title of historical monuments since 21 June 1994. This classification highlights the architectural and historical value of the site, mixing medieval heritage and classical transformations. The castle is thus part of the landscape of the emblematic monuments of Cantal, where it is located, and contributes to the wealth of the heritage of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
