Origin and history

The castle of Esplantas, located in Esplantas-Vazeilles in Haute-Loire, is an emblematic example of the circular philipine-type dungeons, built in the 13th century under the influence of Philippe-Auguste. This monument combines archaic features, such as a dome vault and access through the first floor, with more modern defensive elements, reflecting an evolution of military techniques of the time. Its architecture thus reflects a transition between medieval traditions and the innovations of the late Middle Ages.

In the 16th and 18th centuries, the castle underwent major extensions, incorporating Renaissance and classical elements. The bays and gate, typical of the Renaissance, as well as the fireplaces and woodwork of the eighteenth century, illustrate these periods of transformation. These additions enriched the original defensive character of the dungeon, partially converting it into a more comfortable residence, while preserving its historical identity.

Ranked as a Historic Monument in 2002, the castle of Esplantas is fully protected, including its enclosures, terraces, gardens and interior decorations (stairs, fireplaces, woodwork). This status underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its role in local history. Today, the dungeon and part of the house are open to the public in summer, offering an overview of its evolution throughout the centuries.
