Origin and history
Fayet Castle, also known as the Roque Castle, is a historic monument located in the commune of Fayet, Aveyron, in the Occitanie region. Built mainly during the second half of the 16th century, it is part of the movement of castral constructions that marked the Rouergue after the Hundred Years' War. Although its medieval origins were almost wiped out, the building retained traces of its defensive past, including sled windows added around 1577.
Over the centuries, the castle has undergone major changes. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it was renovated and decorated to accommodate residential use, becoming a family home. This change reflects the changing needs and lifestyles of local aristocracy, moving from military to a more domestic and representative role. The building, in its present state, thus bears witness to these different architectural phases.
Fayet Castle was listed as historical monuments by order of 19 May 2004. This protection recognizes its heritage value, both for its architecture and its history, linked to the evolution of the Rouergue between the late Middle Ages and the modern era. Today, there remains a typical example of castles transformed into seigneurial residences and then private dwellings, illustrating the social and architectural changes in the region.
