Origin and history

The Outrelaize Castle, located in Gouvix in Calvados, is a residence whose origins date back to the late 16th century. Built between 1584 and 1604 by Gaspard Le Marchant, General Counsel in Rouen, he underwent major changes until 1620. This first Renaissance-style building evokes the architecture of Place des Vosges in Paris by its northern wing. The site, acquired in 1569 by Le Marchant, became his residence from 1611.

In the 18th century, the Marquise de Chambors modernises the interior apartments, while a French-style garden is built on the estate. During the Restoration, between 1822 and 1827, Countess Heracle de Polignac had the park redesigned by landscapers Chatelain Frères, transforming it into an English-style garden. This park incorporates hydraulic elements, an artificial cave, and an obelisk, reflecting the romantic tastes of the era.

Interior works were still carried out at the end of the 19th century, completing successive renovations of the castle. The building, which has been partially protected since 1971, has its facades, park, entrance pavilion and dovecote classified or listed as historic monuments between 2005 and 2005. The estate thus illustrates the evolution of architectural and landscape styles over four centuries, from the Renaissance to the 19th century.

The castle retains remarkable elements such as the large living room, the staircase ramp, or the decorations of the old chapel. Its fully protected park includes radiant aisles, bridges, and a water room, showing its heritage importance. The remains of the entrance pavilion and dovecote, as well as the south and east wings of the house, date from the middle of the eighteenth century.
