Origin and history

The castle of Kerninon, located less than one kilometre northwest of the town of Ploulec The present house, rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries, preserves the remains of a 15th or 16th century mansion. A court of honour, marked by an 18th century chapel and pavilion, precedes a closed garden housing a dovecote. 19th-century outbuildings, such as stables and an old cider factory, complete the whole.

The property belonged for five centuries (1427-1925) to the Le Roux de Kerninon family, before passing to the Guilhe Lacombe de Villers in the 1930s, which installed the first electricity of the commune. In 1937, Count Jean de Bélizal, the future mayor of Ploulec His daughter, Marie-Caroline de Bélizal, heir of the estate, sold him in 2019. The castle was partially listed as historical monuments on 22 June 2022, protecting its facades, its honorary courtyard, its enclosed garden, its communes and its pond.

Located 500 metres from the sea, the castle illustrates the architectural evolution of a Breton seigneury, combining medieval elements and modern transformations. Its dovecote, its aisles and its pool testify to a typical seigneurial organisation, while its chapel and its chaplain's house underline its social and religious role in the region. The remains of the original manor house, integrated with subsequent reconstructions, offer an overview of local history over nearly six centuries.
