Origin and history
The Château de Marqueyssac is a French building located in the commune of Vézac in the Dordogne department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Built between the 15th and 17th centuries, it is distinguished by its castle-manor architecture, including a house body flanked by two pavilions in return of square and a round tower housing a staircase. The site is surrounded by important ramparts, reflecting its defensive origin. Its facades and roofs were listed as historical monuments on 29 September 1948.
The castle park, created after 1861 by Julien de Cerval, is a remarkable garden composed of centuries-old hand-cut boxes, cypresses and cyclamens from Naples. Inspired by his stay in Italy, where he had defended the pontifical states as early as 1849, Julien de Cerval designed these gardens hanging on a plateau overlooking the Dordogne valley, 130 metres above sea level. The site offers exceptional views of the nearby castles of Castelnaud and Beynac, reinforcing its tourist attraction.
After World War II, the Marqueyssac gardens, neglected for lack of resources, were restored by Kléber Rossillon, manager of Castelnaud Castle. The park revived the centenary box and preserved the park's iconic views. Today, the castle and its gardens, labeled "Remarkable Garden", attract visitors for their historical, botanical and landscape heritage, while testifying to the local history of the Black Perigord.
The castle is representative of the seigneurial houses of the Périgord, a region marked by a high density of medieval castles and renaissance. Its architecture and gardens illustrate the evolution of horticultural tastes and techniques between the Middle Ages and the 19th century, while integrating into a preserved natural landscape. Current management highlights this dual heritage, architectural and landscape, while ensuring its conservation for future generations.
