Origin and history
The Château de la Ribeyre, located in Cournon-d'Auvergne in Puy-de-Dôme, came into being in the 16th century, when its initial construction was undertaken. Although deeply transformed over the centuries, it preserves notable architectural elements such as a 16th century staircase and neo-classical wallpaper dating from the late 18th or early 19th century. These changes have altered its original character, but attest to the stylistic changes and successive uses of the building.
Ranked among the Historical Monuments, the castle has enjoyed partial protection since 1980, covering specifically its fireplace (on the ground floor and on the first floor) as well as its internal staircase. These protected elements illustrate the heritage significance of interior decorations, reflecting both the Renaissance heritage and subsequent influences. The location of the castle, reported as satisfactory a priori (note 6/10), remains approximate, with an address associated with the place called La Ribeyre in the commune.
The monument is part of a regional context marked, in Auvergne, by architecture often linked to the aristocracy or the rising bourgeoisie of the 16th-17th centuries. The castles of that time were then used as residences, symbols of power, but also places of agricultural or seigneurial management. Their partial preservation, as for Ribeyre, allows us to study the transitions between the late medieval and classical periods, as well as the adaptation of buildings to the changing needs of their occupants.
