Origin and history

The castle of Maureilhan has a quadrangular enclosure typical of medieval fortresses, with four circular corner towers and mâchicoulis, keeping a defensive appearance rare in Occitanie. Its architectural history is divided into four phases. The first, prior to the 15th century, includes the southern half of the west wing, the enclosure with its courtyards, and the pierced towers. These elements reflect a marked military vocation, characteristic of the feudal castles of Languedoc.

Between the 15th and 17th centuries, the castle underwent major transformations, with the partial reconstruction of the west wing and the creation of the south wing at the hinge of the 16th and 17th centuries. This period also saw the addition of a large staircase and a room painted on the first floor, decorated with exceptional frescoes: a deer hunt and a face between triglyphs, rare testimonies of regional seigneurial decorations. These paintings, combined with structural changes, illustrate the evolution of the castle towards a pleasant home, while maintaining defensive features.

In the middle of the eighteenth century, the castle was modernized: the 2/3 north of the west wing and the east wing were rebuilt, the towers were crammed, and the openings were redesigned to suit the tastes of the era. The primitive buildings lost a floor, marking a gradual abandonment of military function. This phase reflects the influence of the Lights on rural architecture, where comfort prevails over defence.

Between the late 18th and 19th centuries, the castle, now disused as a residence, became a farm. utilitarian additions (wine cellar, fourth wing, court closure) are made, partially altering its original plan. This period marks its residential decline, but also its adaptation to local economic needs, typical of seigneurial estates after the Revolution.

Ranked as a Historic Monument in 1980, the castle today protects its facades, towers of angle, courtyards east and south, as well as the murals of the large hall. These elements, symbols of his feudal, reborn and agricultural past, make it a unique testimony to the architectural history of the Herault.
