Louis Abel Gaches - Commander of the castle Descendant of a Protestant family in Tarna.

Origin and history

Antelys Castle, also known as Fournials Castle, is a 19th-century building located in Tarn, Occitanie. Built in 1870 at the request of Louis Abel Gaches, it embodies the legacy of a Protestant family from the Black Mountain, including officers, sailors and general farmers. Its Second Empire style architecture is distinguished by a three-storey house body, a facade flanked by two circular turrets with pepper roofs, and a preserved interior with medieval furniture and period armor.

The estate, surrounded by a small wood, was restored in 2015 before being transformed into guest rooms from 2017. The facade, sober and without superfluous ornaments, is only enhanced by a small balcony above the main entrance. The interior, on the other hand, retains a historical atmosphere thanks to themed rooms and period furniture, reflecting the taste of its former owners for history and traditions.

Louis Abel Gaches, the castle's sponsor, belonged to an influential Protestant lineage in the region. Although the details of his life remain limited in the available sources, his initiative allowed the creation of an emblematic monument of the Tarnian heritage, now open to the public. The recent restoration helped preserve this 19th century architectural testimony, while offering it a new tourist vocation.
