Origin and history

The castle of Bardou, located in the municipality of the same name in Dordogne, has a composite architecture reflecting centuries of history. The central house body, rectangular in shape, is flanked by a 14th century mâchicolis square tower, typical of medieval defensive architecture, as well as a round tower erected in the 15th century. These fortified elements contrast with the cruciform windows, adding a gothic touch to the whole. The mâchicoulis of the square tower bear witness to its initial protective role, while the round tower, later on, may mark an evolution towards a more marked residential use.

In the 17th century, a low wing in return for square was built on the west facade, nicknamed "the wing of the bishop" because it housed the room of Monsignor de Souillac, bishop of Lodève, as well as a chapel that had now disappeared. This detail suggests close links between the castle and the local clergy at that time. Symmetrically, a second wing was added in 1777, accompanied by a two-bay porch in the middle of a stone staircase. This more classical extension illustrates the adaptation of the castle to architectural tastes of the eighteenth century, marking its final passage from a fortress to a seigneurial residence.

The castle has been listed as a Historic Monument since October 12, 1948, recognizing its heritage value. The protected elements include the housing body, towers and wings, reflecting the different phases of construction. Although the sources mention a "a priori satisfactory" location (level 6/10), no further clarification is given on its current state or contemporary uses (visits, accommodation). The official address listed in the Mérimée base would locate the castle at 1 Château De Bardou, confirming its anchoring in the historic village.
