Origin and history
The castle-museum of Cayla, also known as the Eugénie and Maurice de Guérin Museum, is housed in a building originally dating back to a hunting relay built in the 15th century. Transformed over the centuries, especially in the 18th and 19th centuries, it became a gentilhommière in the early 19th century. This place was owned by the family of Maurice de Guérin, renowned poet and prostocer, and his sister Eugénie, also a writer.
Today, the castle houses a museum dedicated to these two literary figures, as well as to painting. It offers temporary exhibitions, such as that of Anne Slacik in 2012, and highlights the local cultural heritage. In 2021, its management was taken over by the Tarn department, marking a new stage in its institutional history.
The architecture of Cayla reflects its multiple transformations, combining old elements with more recent developments. Although the precise architectural details are not described in the sources, its role as hunting relay and then aristocratic residence illustrates the evolution of the uses of castles in Occitania. The museum now perpetuates the memory of the Guérin while opening up to contemporary cultural events.
