Origin and history

Dieppe Castle Museum is a medieval military building built on a cliff overlooking the valley and bay. Ranked a Historic Monument in 1862, it embodies the strategic importance of Dieppe, the port city of Normandy, and its role in coastal defence. Its architecture reflects the military stakes of medieval and modern times, while offering an exceptional panorama of the sea and the city.

The museum, founded in 1863 from local funds and sent from the state, settled in the castle in 1923. Closed during World War II due to damage to the building and collections, it reopened in 1948. His eclectic collections cover a variety of fields: archaeology, fine arts, ethnology, natural sciences and maritime history, with remarkable pieces such as ivorys, sailing models and navigation instruments.

The castle and its museum also illustrate the evolution of museum practices in France, moving from a cabinet of curiosities to a structured cultural institution. The label Musée de France highlights the quality of its collections, especially those dedicated to the sea, a central theme of the Dieppoise identity. Today, there remains a key place to understand the local history, art and maritime exchanges of Normandy.

Among its assets, the museum houses navigational objects (planospheres, instruments), works of art (paintings, sculptures) and ethnological artifacts (costumes, tools) from Africa, America, Asia and Oceania. This diversity reflects Dieppe's historical ties to transoceanic trade and exploration, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The site, located on Rue de Chastes in Dieppe (Seine-Maritime), enjoys a strategic location, both in historical and tourist terms. Although GPS coordinates and map accuracy are considered passable (note 5/10), its location on the cliff makes it a visible and emblematic landmark of the city. The museum continues to enrich its funds through donations, acquisitions and partnerships with the state.
