Origin and history

The castle of Canet, located in the eponymous village of l'Herault, is a 14th century or earlier building. Today reduced to the state of remains, it is listed in the General Inventory of Cultural Heritage. Its remains, located on the Grand Place, recall its historical importance in the region.

The first known lords of Canet belong to the Guilhem family, powerful lords of Clermont-Lodève. As early as the 11th century, Raymond Bérenger de Clermont received rights to Canet Castle and a portion of Torreilles, confirming his strategic role. In 1215, Baron Aymeri of Clermont left in his will the rents of the castle to pious works, illustrating his connection with the local nobility and religious practices of the time.

In the 19th century, in 1830, the castle was acquired by Joseph-François de Marguerit, a former emigrant, marking a transition to private property. Today, the remains of the castle remain a private property, protected by their registration in the General Inventory of Cultural Heritage. Their preservation bears witness to the medieval and seigneurial heritage of Canet.
