Origin and history

The Château de Caratel, located in the commune of Louisfert in the Loire-Atlantique (region Pays de la Loire), is a building whose foundations date back to the 15th century, while its current construction dates mainly from the 17th century, between 1648 and 1653. It is based on older foundations, reflecting a noble occupation from the 16th century. This monument illustrates the architectural evolution between the late Middle Ages and the classical period, typical of the Ligerian castles.

The castle had several notable owners, including Isabelle Dispanays (before 1644), the Deux family (1644–80), and Françoise Sagnier in 1680. In the 18th century, it passed into the hands of Thierry de La Prevalage (until 1750), followed by the Bouexic de La Driennays. In the 19th century, the Cambourg family became its owner, keeping the estate until at least 2007. These successions reflect the social and economic history of the local nobility.

Ranked a Historic Monument since December 19, 1985, the castle protects its facades, roofs, as well as painted beams ceilings. These elements underline its heritage importance, mixing medieval heritage and beautifications of the 17th and 18th centuries. The building remains a testimony of the seigneurial dynamics in Anjou and neighbouring Brittany, areas marked by a dense castral settlement.

Today, Caratel Castle is located in 5283 Caratel Valley, Louisfert, in a preserved rural setting. Although the information on its access (visits, rentals) is not detailed in the sources, its listing in the inventory of Historical Monuments makes it a protected site, likely to interest lovers of history and architecture.
