Origin and history

Castellet-Saint-Cassien Castle is a building built during the first half of the seventeenth century. Located in Val-de-Chalvagne, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, it embodies the residential and defensive architecture of this period in Provence. Its listing in the Inventory of Historic Monuments, by order of 18 December 2012, underlines its heritage importance and its remarkable state of conservation.

In the 17th century, castles in this region often served as residences for local noble or bourgeois families, while playing a role in the social and economic organization of rural territories. Their construction reflected the architectural evolutions of the era, sometimes combining defensive elements inherited from the previous centuries with more comfortable arrangements, adapted to the lifestyles of the provincial aristocracy.

The inclusion of Castellet-Saint-Cassien Castle among the historical monuments allows today to protect and enhance this heritage, while offering a material testimony of local history. This type of building, characteristic of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, contributes to the cultural richness of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, where Mediterranean and Alpine influences intersect.
