Origin and history

The Château de Cillery is a 19th-century building located in Jassans-Riottier, 25 km from Lyon, near the Dombes. Built in 1860 by Lyon architect Benoît Poncet, it was enlarged between 1864 and 1866, from 16 to 27 openings. Poncet, also designer of the local church, is buried there with his family.

The castle, called a "jewel of the Saône", presents a U-shaped plan with a central house and symmetrical wings housing the commons. Its architecture combines stone and brick, preceded by a terrace and a courtyard bounded by the adjoining buildings.

The seven-hectare park, on a slight slope, was developed by the seed farmer François Treyve. It has 680 trees of 38 species, green factories, a pergola and a greenhouse with a rotunda winter garden. Although remarkable, the park is not visiting.

The castle illustrates the influence of the architects of Lyon of the 19th century and the taste of the era for landscape parks. Its history remains closely linked to its creator, Benoît Poncet, a major figure in local urban planning.
