Origin and history
The castle of Fontenaille, also known as the ancient convent of Bethany, is a building located in the municipality of Ecommoy, Sarthe. This monument is located in the historical region of Maine, southeast of the present town. Its architecture is distinguished in particular by two twin pavilions dating from the seventeenth century, erected on the edge of the moat surrounding the site.
These pavilions, outbuildings of the former convent, were listed as historic monuments on 31 May 1943. Their preservation reflects the heritage importance of the site, although available sources do not further detail the history of its construction or occupants. The castle is now listed among the historical monuments of the Sarthe.
The historical context of the Maine region, where Ecommoy is located, was marked in the 17th century by a social organization centred around religious institutions and local seigneuries. Convents, like Bethany, often played a spiritual and economic role in rural communities. Their architecture reflected both their religious function and their integration into the seigneurial landscape of the time.
