Origin and history

The Hotel des Moneyroux, located in Guéret in Creuse, is an emblematic building in flamboyant Gothic style. Although he is often nicknamed "Château des Counts de la Marche", no count has ever resided there. This monument, built in the 15th century, bears witness to the refined architecture of this period and the importance of local lords in the regional administration.

The hotel was built by Antoine Allard, lord of Moneyroux and treasurer of Marche County. This character, close to the financial circles of Pierre de Bourdon and Anne de Beaujeu, embodies the role of urban elites in the management of territories under the Ancien Régime. Today, the building serves as a seat on the Creuse County Council and opens to the public during Heritage Days.

Partially classified as historical monuments since 1926 and 1941, the Hotel des Moneyroux illustrates the duality between heritage protection and contemporary use. Its remarkable elements, such as the chapel of the Penitents or the staircase on a square plane, reflect the evolution of the architectural techniques and social functions of these buildings, between seigneurial residence and place of administrative power.
