Origin and history
The Château le Mas-Ladaughter is located at the place called the Mas La fille, in the territory of the commune of Bourganeuf, in the department of Creuse (region New Aquitaine). This building, dated from the 17th century, illustrates the residential architecture of the period, marked by major renovations both inside and outside. Its spatial organization, centered on a square dungeon, reflects the aesthetic and defensive cannons of the period, although its primary vocation seems more related to prestige than to fortification.
The estate is structured around a "U"-shaped main building, structured by a square central dungeon. Five outbuildings, a dovecote, a tennis court and a park complete the whole, demonstrating a desire to combine agricultural utility, leisure and social representation. These external elements, typical of the seigneurial or bourgeois properties of the Old Regime, underline the high status of the occupants and their integration into a local economic network, probably centred on agriculture and livestock.
Located northwest of Bourganeuf, the castle is part of a rural landscape where noble castles and houses played a central role in the territorial organisation. At that time, Creuse, like much of the Central Massif, was characterized by an agropastoral economy, a hierarchical society and low urban density. Buildings such as the Mas-Ladaughter served as residences for local elites, while symbolizing their power over the lands and surrounding populations.
