Origin and history

The château de Grimaud is a medieval fortress attested as early as the 11th century, built on a rocky pile overlooking the plain. Originally it served as a centre for the seigneury of Freinet, covering the current territories of Grimaud and Saint-Tropez. The first modest fortifications were strengthened in the 14th century when the village wall joined the seigneurial defences. In the 15th century, a quadrangular building was added south of the dungeon, and its base was transformed into a cistern.

In the 17th century, the Castellane family modernized the castle by adding two round towers and developing an east wing on three levels. Jean-Baptiste de Castellane, last occupant, makes it a place of receptions while his main residence remains in the village. During the French Revolution, the castle was abandoned, declared a stone quarry and then dismantled. His stones are sold at auction. The ruins, classified as Historic Monuments in 1996, now house an outdoor theatre used for summer events.

The ensemble comprises three successive enclosures and a central dungeon, typical of feudal architecture. Although partially destroyed in 1565, traces of 17th century restorations remain. The subsoil of the site, classified as an archaeological area, retains remains of the various phases of occupation. The castle illustrates the evolution of fortifications, moving from a defensive role to a residential and festive function before its decline.
