Origin and history
The castral motte of Marimont-lès-Bénestroff is a medieval monument located in the village of the same name, in Moselle (Great East region). This type of fortification, characteristic of the Middle Ages, consisted of an artificial mound surmounted by a wooden or stone tower surrounded by ditches. The castral mots served as points of defence and territorial control for local lords, while sometimes sheltering seigneurial habitats or garrisons.
In the Lorrain context of the Middle Ages, the castral mots were part of a network of fortifications linked to feudal organization. The area, then divided into seigneuries, saw these works play a key role in protecting people and agricultural resources. Their establishment often met strategic challenges, such as the control of communication axes or border areas.
The inscription of the Marimont-lès-Bénestroff motte at the Historic Monuments in 1990 demonstrates its heritage importance, although the available sources do not specify its detailed history or its potential owners.
