Origin and history

The Saint-Louis Cathedral of La Rochelle is a hybrid monument, mixing an 18th century structure and a Gothic bell tower of the 14th century, a vestige of the ancient church of Saint Barthélemy. Its construction began in 1742 under the impetus of Cardinal de Fleury and Bishop Augustin Roch de Menou de Charnizay, but the lack of funds suspended its completion. Nevertheless, the building was opened to worship in 1784, though not complete, and was classified as a historic monument in 1906.

The present bell tower, known as Saint Barthélemy, is the only remaining element of the medieval parish church, destroyed in 1568 by Protestants during the Wars of Religion. This bell tower, used as a military tower during the siege of 1628, was preserved and integrated into the new cathedral. The church of Saint Barthélemy, rebuilt in the seventeenth century, was temporarily used as a cathedral before being demolished at the Revolution to allow the extension of the present building.

The architecture of the cathedral, originally designed by Jacques V Gabriel and then taken over by his son Jacques-Ange, combines a Latin cross plan with a sober facade, typical of religious classicism. Inside, the cupola of the transept and William Bouguereau's paintings in the chapel of the Virgin illustrate his artistic heritage. The stained glass, added in the 19th century, replaces the original white glass.

The Great Protestant Temple, confiscated after the siege of 1628, became the first cathedral before being destroyed by fire in 1687. This transfer marked the creation of the diocese of La Rochelle, officially established in 1648. Conflicts between Catholics and Protestants, as well as budgetary constraints, delayed the definitive construction, completed only under the Second Empire (1849–57).

Among the remarkable elements, the Merklin-Schütze organ (1867), listed as a historical monument, and the three bells of the bell tower, including the bell tower Marie-Ursule (1818), bear witness to its sound heritage. The chapel of the sailors, decorated with ex-voto like that of the Sapphire (1741), also recalls the port role of La Rochelle in the slave trade.

Today, the cathedral, still in cult activity, preserves traces of its turbulent history, from the wars of Religion to the Revolution. Its recently restored bell tower (2021–2023) and its interior decorations make it a symbol of the Romanesque heritage, between medieval memory and classicism of the Enlightenment.
