Origin and history

The Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Créteil, designed by architect Charles-Gustave Stoskopf, is the seat of the diocese of Créteil, created in 1966. Initially, the church of Saint-Louis de Choisy-le-Roi served as a temporary cathedral. In 1976, a first modest cathedral was inaugurated in Créteil and replaced by a more ambitious project, inaugurated in 2015 after a total reconstruction.

The present cathedral, rebuilt as part of the Créteil Cathédrale+ project, is distinguished by a symbolic architecture: two domes evoking hands joined in prayer, and a form of fish seen from the sky. The bell tower, 44 meters high, dominates the parvis. The building, more luminous and visible, embodies a will of the Church to mark its presence in the Val-de-Marne.

During the work (2013-2015), a "temporary cathedral" hosted the offices. The new cathedral was consecrated on 20 September 2015 by Cardinal André Vingt-Trois, in the presence of Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve. The cross of consecration, works by Catherine Mogenet, and the altar, carved by Vincent Guiro, enrich his artistic heritage.

The project, supported financially by the Cardinal's Buildings Work, cost €9 million. The wooden structure, symbolizing hands in prayer, was laid after ten months of work. The first Mass was celebrated on 12 July 2015 by Bishop Michel Santier, marking the rebirth of this modern and emblematic place of worship.
