Origin and history

The Cathedral of Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte de Nevers, located in the Nièvre in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is an emblematic monument whose history dates back to the 6th century. Originally dedicated to Saint Gervais and Saint Protais, it was rebuilt and rededicated to Saints Cyr and Julitte, martyrs of the fourth century, after the arrival of their relics in the ninth century. These relics, reported by Bishop Jerome de Nevers (800–816), made the cathedral a major pilgrimage site, reinforced by miracles attributed to the saints.

The current building is the result of several construction phases. After a fire in 1211, Bishop Guillaume de Saint-Lazare rebuilt the cathedral in a Gothic style, while preserving the 11th century Romanesque choir. This particularity gives the cathedral two opposite choirs, an architectural rarity in France. Work continued in the 14th and 15th centuries, with the addition of a radiant Gothic choir, side chapels, and the 52-metre high Bohier Tower, adorned with 43 statues.

The cathedral was deeply marked by conflicts and restorations. During the Revolution, it suffered iconoclastic destruction, losing some of its furniture and statues. The Allied bombing of 1944 destroyed much of the Gothic choir and stained glass windows, resulting in an identical reconstruction between 1946 and 1966. Post-war archaeological excavations revealed Gallo-Roman remains, including a temple dedicated to Janus, and a 6th-century Paleo-Christian Baptistery.

The interior of the cathedral is home to artistic treasures, such as a Romano-Byzantine fresco of the 11th century in the Romanesque choir, a 15th century Mise au tombeau, and contemporary stained glass windows signed by artists such as Jean-Michel Alberola and Claude Viallat. The latter, installed after 1944, replace the destroyed stained glass windows and illustrate a modern approach to sacred art. The cathedral, classified as a Historical Monument in 1862, remains a spiritual and cultural symbol, thanks in particular to its link with St Bernadette Soubirous, whose body rests in Nevers.

The liturgical furniture, although partially destroyed, includes remarkable pieces such as a 16th century jacquemart, 18th century stalls, and a modern organ installed in 1978. Lateral chapels, like that of the Immaculate Conception, bear witness to the evolution of religious practices, especially with the influence of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception before its official proclamation in 1854. Today, the cathedral benefits from restoration campaigns, such as the one launched in 2020 as part of the Cathedral Plan, to preserve its unique heritage.

The cathedral's exterior architecture is distinguished by its two choirs, its northern 13th century portal (partly destroyed during the Wars of Religion), and its south portal of the 15th century, known as the Loire, decorated with fine sculptures. The Bohier Tower, with its statues of saints and prophets, dominates the city and symbolizes episcopal power. Contemporary stained glass windows, although criticized for their lack of unity, offer a modern reading of light and the sacred, including references to Revelation and heavenly Jerusalem.
