Origin and history

Frontenaud Cemetery is a historic monument located in the municipality of the same name, in Saône-et-Loire, Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. It dates back to the fourth quarter of the 15th century, a period marked by a religious and funeral architecture typical of the late Middle Ages. Among its remarkable elements, a cross dating from that time was classified as historical monuments by order of 20 September 1927.

At the end of the 15th century, cemeteries played a central role in the life of rural Burgundy communities. They served not only as a burial place, but also as a gathering point for religious ceremonies and local festivals. The presence of a monumental cross, like Frontenaud's, reflects the symbolic importance of these spaces, often linked to popular piety and the social organization of the time.

These monuments were generally erected under the impulse of local parishes or lords, although the sources do not specify the exact sponsors here.
