Origin and history

The cross of Dienne is a monumental cross located in the cemetery of the village of Dienne, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Probably made between the 16th and 17th centuries, it is distinguished by its method of assembly: the upper part is fixed to the barrel by a metal ring, a technique characteristic of this period. Its ends are decorated with volutes, adding an artistic dimension to its functional structure.

On one of its faces, the cross represents Christ on the cross, surrounded by two figures identified as the Virgin and Saint John. The other side shows the Virgin accompanied by two small characters, probably local saints or St.Cirgue and St.Julitte. These iconographic representations reflect the religious and artistic traditions of the time, mixing devotion and symbolism.

The cross was classified as historical monuments by order of 24 June 1983, thereby recognizing its heritage value. It belongs to the municipality of Dienne and is located precisely in the enclosure of the cemetery, near the rue du Couvent. Its state of conservation and its location make it an important testimony to the religious and architectural history of the Haute-Auvergne.
